It has come to the attention of those in the “Christian community” that our world is going downhill. In some cases this is a shock, especially to those whom reside in the United States. Same sex marriage, drugs, and many other issues are invading our quote “Christian” nation. May the suggestion be made that the United States was never truly a Christian nation to begin with. Even the very freedom we hold dear, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” seems to fly in the face of the values of Christ himself and his Kingdom we are called to live in.
Do we as members of the church try to fight battles that are not of this world with the tools of this world? Perhaps we tend to forget that we are in a battle for the souls of men and women not trying to modify how they behave. Do we in the church focus on exteriors and not the issues at hand.
An example of this is the same sex marriage issue being faced all across the nation. Now I am in no way stating that I support same sex marriage, the Bible is incredibly clear that homosexuality is a sin, but this sin particular sin is a hot button for many in the church. Laws have been passed that have legalized same sex marriage in many states and in light of this many in the church are aiming to get these laws overturned. Petitions are being put together, signatures gathered, and hundreds of hours being put in to overturn laws. Might the suggestion be made that if we as believers put the same amount of time, money, and energy into praying and pursuing the lost instead of telling them what they are doing is wrong we may actually begin to fulfill the vision Christ has for His Body.
Paul asks us in 1 Corinthians “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?” Maybe, just maybe if we as believers stop building our kingdoms, pursuing what seems right to us, and started to understand we created the issues with the church, we may just be able to find Christs love and reach those who are so desperately trying find what will fulfill the desire that longs within them.
Christs life was spent with prostitutes, tax collectors, and the “unclean,” do we consider ourselves to “clean” to be around these individuals? Do we try to tell them to clean up their act and then come to us? Do we hide behind our petitions and protests instead of engaging individuals wherever they are at?
Perhaps it is time to stop fighting the issues that are not of this world with the tools that are of this world.
